ML Researcher

National Technical University of Athens

Nikolaos Anastasiou is an ML Researcher at OrionLab. He holds a combined MSc & BSc degree in Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and he is currently pursuing an MSc degree in Data Science and Machine Learning in School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (NTUA).

His internship was at the BEYOND Earth Observation Center at the National Observatory of Athens, where he was involved in many Earth Observation projects. He mapped wildfires using both GIS software and Python, and he automated the mapping procedure and statistics extraction. He also participated in several Emergency Management Service (CEMS), both in proposal writing and technical report and analysis. Following his internship, he was given a scholarship at Archimedes at the Athena Research Center, where he implemented a Masked Autoencoder to develop a foundation model for two downstream tasks: fire risk and fire spread.

His research interests are in the Earth Observation field with a focus on satellite remote sensing and deep learning. His undergraduate diploma thesis focused on modeling wildfire spread using deep learning, which was also was published as a paper in IEEE Access.

Now he is working on active fires detection from Meteosat Third Generation satellite. His involvement includes the creation of a machine-learning ready dataset and training deep learning models to detect active forest fires from real-time data.
